Shame and Weight Loss

I spent many years struggling with my body weight and image. That struggle was so preponderant in my life that I spent most of my days worrying and counting calories. That was my number one concern, and all my life was gravitating around it.

When I became a Dietitian, I saw the same struggle in my patients. They were feeling conflicted about their body image and ashamed for the way they looked.

In a society where there's so much pressure on looking good, I saw how my clients automatically compared themselves to skinny celebrities, and as a consequence, they felt so ashamed that they couldn't look at themselves in the mirror or even going to the gym for fear of judgment.

When you feel ashamed about the way you look, it becomes almost impossible to make a real and profound change.

This happens because shame puts you in a state of constant stress, at best, and depression, at worst. When this occurs, you tend to isolate and have a lot less energy, both mental and physical, to pursue any goal. As a consequence, stress responses like emotional and binge eating are triggered.

If this is how you feel, dieting and exercise probably won't work. On the contrary, this approach can even make things worse because you're making enormous efforts, feel deprived, tired, and cranky, and often fail to see quick results, which will put you even deeper in your hole.

A healthy body cannot coexist with an unhealthy mind.

If you are determined to lose weight, some things need to be addressed first: your self-talk, your beliefs about yourself and food, and past traumas that trigger unhealthy behaviors, to name a few. All of these things stand between you and your weight loss goals, and ultimately between you and your life enjoyment.

Learning to be forgiving and gentle with yourself is the real challenge, but it is also a necessary first step towards a healthier weight.

Find the strength and the help you need to shed that shame off of you; otherwise, shedding weight will not be enough.

There are many techniques out there to help you feel better emotionally, and to get rid of unhelpful feelings. In my practice I use PSYCH-K®. This is a powerful tool to re-program your mind, and to change some beliefs you might have that are holding you back from having the life you want.
